Allocation of funds
What will your inheritance be used for? Generally speaking, that is the same purpose for which your donations are used: to support the mission of the foundation. On the one hand, that is translating and publishing the books in other languages, and on the other hand, making the work of the Masters known in the Netherlands and abroad. Whereas your donations are used to finance the daily operations of the foundation, inheritances or bequests give the foundation special important extra possibilities. In the first instance, inheritances provide the foundation with a financial buffer against unexpected circumstances. With your inheritance, you are therefore assuring the financial survival of the foundation in the long term. An example of such an unexpected and unbudgeted circumstance was the lengthy court case in Belgium. For court cases, it is often the case that the plantiff counts on the financial incapacity of the persons accused in order to finance lengthy court cases. In this way, many accused persons lose their case, simply because they cannot (continue to) pay lawyer fees and other costs, while they would precisely have won their case if they had had more money. Even if this is unjust, in reality 'justice' is often not done in this way. For example, in the case of Belgium, the society needed specialist legal information and expertise, which could not have been obtained (on time) without the necessary funds.
By winning the case in Belgium in such a convincing way, we assume that no new legal attacks on the work of the Masters will take place again. As a result of this, we can now spend the funds from inheritances on building up the University of Christ, instead of defending the work.
Inheritances give the society the opportunity to set up long term plans. They give the society the opportunity of financing a policy for the longer term. In the first instance, we have in mind here the translation project. Translating costs the society a great deal of money, which cannot be managed from the annual budgets. It is a 'long-winded' project which can only be productive with five and ten year plans.
